2019 On-Water Boat Handling Courses 

Affordable introductory courses for the whole family.

Whether you love boating and want to gain confidence at the helm, you’re considering buying or renting a boat and want to learn new skills, or you’re just curious about boating, these courses are a fun, easy, and affordable way to build your boating confidence!

The BoatUS Foundation is offering three courses that will focus on introductory boat-handling techniques, including:
 
  • centering the wheel
  • shifting
  • steering and throttle control
  • stopping
  • station holding
  • understanding the “weathervane” effect and
  • how to use “the boater’s eye” technique to safely navigate
 
 
Intro to Boating and the ladies only course, Women Making Waves are taught aboard 20-26 foot powerboats provided by Freedom Boat Club Annapolis. Both courses are three hours long and include show admission. $149.
 
Our Junior Captain course is for teens ages 13-19. This is a  90-minute course taught aboard 14-foot rigid-hull inflatable boats and includes show admission for the enrolled teen and parent.  The Junior Captain program is offered under a partnership with National Safe Boating Council and the Annapolis School of Seamanship 
 

Intro to boating 

3 hours on-water
3-4 students per boat

  • Centering the wheel
  • Shifting gears and throttle control
  • Preparing the boat for departure
  • Steering straight at idle speed
  • Station Holding

 

Women Making Waves

3 hours on-water
3-4 students per boat

  • Centering the wheel
  • Shifting gears and throttle control
  • Preparing the boat for departure
  • Steering straight at idle speed
  • Station Holding

Women Students Only

Precision Docking and Boat Handling

3 hours on-water
3-4 students per boat

  • 180 degree turn-arounds
  • Docking on port & starboard
  • Departing from dock
  • Using S.C.A.N. procedures

Course Schedule:

  • Friday – 10:30, 11:00, 12:30, 1:00, 2:30, and 3:00
  • Saturday – 10:30, 11:00, 12:30, 1:00, 2:30, and 3:00
  • Sunday – 10:30 and 11:00
